Post subject:  Major install project

Hi guys,

New Phantom Blue RX8 owner. Put 500k on it in the first week, but stuffed my shoulder and needed surgery, so took the opportunity to put it in to SuperAudio for my mate Patrick to rip apart. Yes, I am nervous!

I ripped all my audio gear out of my old car (bigger sedan) and I'm trying to shoe-horn it into the RX8, with a few additions. Should prove interesting.

I'll use this topic to blog the progress. Here's a pic of the car at the dealer before I picked it up..

Post subject:  Door speakers

Grills cut out, speaker boxes fabricated. The 4" speakers are rotated onto axis. The 6.5" speakers fire straight in. The boxes are fabricated in a cool way, Patrick built a big fibreglass box to use up all the 8" space once removed, but then cut a new box through it to house the 6" with the door for volume seperated from a smaller sealed 4" pod.

Post subject:  Boot

Trying to fit the amps, the 2 13" subs in the boot and still have some room is going to be fun.

Needless to say the spare went away, might see if I can fit it back in later.

We decided to try and create a false floor with 2 big boxes, and reverse mount the 13" firing down on an angle in the corners.

The amps have been sent to be sand blasted and powder coated to match the car colour.

So far only started on fabricating the bottom of the speaker boxes.

Post subject:  Head unit kit arrived! Woohoo!

Just got the Kanatechs kit in the mail this morning. Can definitely vouch for Kevin at Kanatechs, awesome to deal with. I ordered the kit last thursday and paid via wire tranfer, they posted it Tuesday, and I got it that Friday! Good tracking on the site too. They use Australia Post Courier at this end so you can also use the tracking number on the Australia Post Site. I was a bit worried it would get lost as I supplied the wrong postcode! DOH!, but no problems, easily got to me in on the 4th day.

Anyway, couple of pics attached. I went for this kit as it has the control unit (small, that fits under the ashtray) to replace the aircon controls.

PS. Parcel shelf speakers installed and sound-matted. I forgot to get pics, will get them this afternoon when I drop the kit off to Pat.

Looking good. You are a brave man. How much did you pay for the kanatech kit?

Post subject:  Kanatech Kit

Kanatech kit was about $500-ish. Cheapest was direct from factory, but they aren't set up for sales so I had to do a bank transfer. They are looking for a disstributor here. The quality of the face plate isn't great, divots in the paint job, and it's wider than din, they have blanking fillers that you put on either side. So Patrick is going to glue them in, use plastic filler, sand it back and re-finish it to be a standard 2-din size. A bit of screwing around, but will look awesome.

Post subject:  Amp and rear parcel speakers installed

Here's the photos I forgot of the Focals in the rear shelf and the RF 120a2 mounted under it (where the bose amp was) not concerned about heat on that amp. I have to remember to ask Patrick about baffles under the speakers on the shelf.

Post subject:  Choice of Head Unit?

So now I can't make up my mind on the head unit.

I was thinking the Kenwood 8039 ($1800) or the JVC 800 ($1200) rough prices. But I don't like the interfaces on either very much and there are pros and cons to each.

Looking at perhaps a carputer instead. Main SQ comes from the Nak anyway. The 2-din will be day to day and dvd demo, bluetooth for my phone, etc.

What would be ideal (my wish list) is an Apple built 2 din unit! With a cool interface like iPhone! And fully integrated, customisable, etc....

Aahhh well, too bad...

Post subject:  Infill G4?

Anyone had much feedback or know much about these? Could be cool to have in the RX8.

If you are into the mac then get a mac mini. then your only issue is a touchscreen monitor.

I have to say its dissapointing to hear about the poor quality of the kanatech.

I think your car was the one I was looking to get from Slaven! And then I got a call on a Sat letting me know it was sold!

Good luck with the install. Why Kenwood or JVC for headunit. I think there are more expensive brands out there? I never interested in car audio as people know...

Post subject:  Lol!

Nikoid: Sorry 'bout that man. They have another one in there now if you want it, same colour... :)

takahashi: I guess that's why I posted this in the Audio/Visual forum and not in one of the performance sections! :)

I am leaning toward a carputer now. The G4 seems a bit ex-e but the all -in one 2-din would suit my dash kit nicely. and booting in a few seconds is cool. Just have to work out some potential issues around sound quality.

Hey, has anyone got usb broadband or usb digital tv working in a carputer in the group? Anyone know any rx8 carputer installs in australia?

Not sure if he is still an owner but sco had a carputer running Windows.

The only issue I see in running wireless broadband with say a NextG card is the Antenna location.

However cards like this

http://www.novatelwireless.com/products ... eu730.html

have external antenna options.

Cheers
