the govt would be much better off making advanced driver training (and I'm not talking about a half day course here) mandatory for all new drivers.

Now we're being productive! Once those who truly believe they're bulletproof see just how ridiculously vunerable they and their cars are, driving attitudes WILL change. Anyone who has done a defensive driving course will strongly vouch that it was worth the effort just to see how skilled they truly are and how different road/accident conditions affect the car and handling, braking etc.

Hell, going to a skid pan and trying to drift was invaluable for handling not just the 8 but other cars in the wet. I did logbook to get my license, and even with that loosing traction in the wet was never touched upon.

I'd rather money be spent on driver training too. But, you know, that makes too much sense 8)

I don't think taxpayer money should be spent on driver training. People should have to pay to get this training and if that means it costs them a few grand to get properly qualified to drive, so be it. If licences were harder and more expensive to get, people might be more careful in their first few years of driving...

Or there would just be an increase in driving without a license because people couldn't afford to get it

Maybe a driving test on a special track, like what they do in Finland (iirc), including those skid inducing wheels they put on the cars. Maybe make it annual thing to be passed for the first X years to keep your license?

Education is definitely the way to go though, I don't think common sense is too common any more

Yeah well that's where I'm a little right of Attilla the Hun. There should be a mandatory gaol term for driving without a licence. A month in chokey will make the little shits realise it's not all fun and games to be such a smartarse...

wow. u get really worked up about p platers...
well...to be fair...there are terrible drivers and great drivers from all generations. yes the younger people are more prone to being more of a dickhead, but who hasnt seen a middle aged person trying to be young again.
and who hasnt seen old people driving...i dont even have to give an example of bad driving from that generation.
my thoughts are that everybody, no matter what their age should be treated equally. and driving test conducted every couple of years for every driver.

and the advanced driving course ideas are awesome. but goodluck trying to find people willing to pay that much for just wanting to drive their camrys...

Haha, dickheads in general piss me off and I agree it's not restricted to the young. I meant anyone driving without a licence - young or old - should spend some quiet time thinking about it.

Indeed, just to prove I'm an equal opportunity ranter ( ) I also agree that people should be tested every 5 years (at their cost) for knowledge of the road rules and their practical ability. Failure means meandatory remedial courses and failure of those means suspension of licence with the opportunity to try again in six months time. Who knows, maybe we'll finally get people who know how to enter and exit a roundabout, know what blinkers and horns are for, know why they should keep left and even know how to merge into a moving line of traffic (I guess the last is too much to hope for  ).

And when I come to power (echoes of Clarkson here  ) I won't need good luck finding people "willing to pay" - they'll be bloody well made to pay if they wish to drive and be taught that a licence is a privilege to be earned, not a right because you're over 17 and have figured out how to do a hill start and reverse park.

Good to know i'm not the only one. Where i'm from roundabouts are a novelty item. They're more like a figure-of-8 death race than the highly efficent functional intersections they should/were designed to be.
