Canberra Exhaust Installation

Post by verko » Tue Aug 30, 2011 12:23 pm

Hey guys.

I've recently been told my the guys at Mazda in Philip that my Cat Converter has given up on me and they tell me that they want $4k + for a new one (not gonna happen). So I was wondering if any of you guys have had any dealings with any local exhaust shops and what I can expect quality and cost wise?

Cheers.

Hello and welcome

I searched high and low around Canberra when my cat died. No exhaust shop in Canb had dealt with RX8s at that stage or was interested.

I ended up with a SMB full Exhaust which included a cat, mid pipe and two mufflers. Very neat, bolts straight on, nice fit. The noise changes a little deeper but not much louder than standard. I wanted more noise so I put my Hymee mufflers back on after I worked out the failed cat hadn’t melted them.
I also replaced both O2 sensors which I got from Mazda America at about the third of the price of Mazda Aust, but I had code errors for them before the cat failed.

Basically I found it no harder to go for one of the after market options. There are some are big names, $$ from OS when you search, or the Aussie option which SMB is one that other rotary owners here and on Ausrotary had recommended.

Mazda Phillip would install an after market system for you, but maybe try Reliance Rotary at Fyshwick who have a longer rotary history and probably other options.

From memory it took about 5 days for delivery and $2200, which they are still about that looking at the web sight. (exhaust + Cat)

Hey, thanks for the reply.

It seems that most places now days work on RX8s, I was getting prices from $300 to $500 for a cat and up to $2000 for a new exhaust system. Mazda Phillip said they could do it but it wouldnt be under warranty and Reliance seemed a bit more expensive than everywhere else (but I guess theyre specialists). Im also thinking about ordering a kit off the net, possibly the Hymee or Racing Beat, and installing the thing myself with the help of my rotary savvy mate.

Ahh these cars are super nice to drive but a pain when things go wrong.
