new member seeking some advice on purchase....

Post by scotta75 » Wed Apr 09, 2014 11:18 am

Hi guys and gals.
About to join the family of owners who appreciate these awesome cars. I have my eye on 2005 model with 39500 original kms on it. Clearly it has only been driven on sunny weekends, but plan on driving it most days.....Will this be a shock to the motor? Im getting a compression test done next week to ascertain its condition, but just wondering if a good compression result will hide any other potential issues if the motor has been stagnant, and not driven on a daily basis. I know low kms generally is a no brainer when it comes to buying an rx8 or any car for that matter, but just thinking outside the box a little. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Read the owners FAQ.

make sure it's had the recalls and it's been serviced properly.
along with a comp test which is a must get a prepurchase inspection at rx8 specialties SE suburbs
or Mazworx NW suburbs. both are capable of doing comp tests to

I bought an 04 just 15 months ago in the exact same situation, 40000kms, weekend car.
Basically if you are observant and do all the right checks, (you can find what are common faults are in search) I think it shouldnt matter how many kms the engine has done.
A healthy engine, performs, is quiet, no strange noises. If it does that you have a winner.
To be safe though, a new battery, oil change, maybe coils and plugs should be changed anyway.
I have done 15000 ks in that time and have had to buy a bhr kit with plugs and leads due to sluggish performance as well as the usual oil changes of course.
Apart from that it has had no problems whatsoever.

Good luck, as for the compression check if there is reason to believe the powertrain is not 100% there is no harm in testing it.

I'm pretty sure killer bee lives in ballarat. Maybe message him.
Fellow Rotor fans gather now for our daily prayer.....

As I lay rubber down the street,
I pray for traction I can keep,
But if I spin and start to slide,
Please dear god protect my sweet ride.

Amen

I wouldn't know of any specialists in Ballarat.
Try killerbee as bob suggested

RXELR8,

Just out of curiousity, do you remember your compression test results? Assuming you got it done….

Hey guys. Checked out the 8 today and it was impressive. Getting a comp test done to confirm the motors health but I have only one concern. The owner has never red lined the car! its fair to say that this shocked me a bit. He is the second owner so im not sure how it was treated previously, but he has owned it since it had 20000ks on it …. It now has 39500. Should I be concerned about carbon build up or will a good compression test eliminate all doubt?

A compression test won't really reveal too much about carbon buildup specifically, more about he condition of the seals and how worn they are.
There are methods for giving your engine a decarb clean so even if there is some buildup (which after 20,000km of granny driving I'm sure there would be some) it might not be a long term concern.

Hey guys.
Finally found the one! Just put down a deposit on a 2005 velocity red with 26000 original ks on the clock. Compression test came up strong and healthy. Can't wait to pick her up in a few weeks and stretch her legs!
