long time listener, first time rotor

Post by BB888 » Fri Jul 15, 2016 3:03 am

Hi, BB here in Melbourne, new member.

Joined the site the other day to find out if anyone could give me advice about whether turbo mod is legal on RX8 in oz, then I read all posts from 2012 on, saw mazfix's 10k turbo conversion, thought two years to save money for car, then get RX8 specialties (Tim sounds like the only tuner who doesn't set off a war on this site) to do pre purchase inspection, check with forum members for quality used car blah blah blah.......that's what I planned, swear to the forced induction rotor gods..... I think you will agree they are real after this tale of woe/fortune, I know I must have met one!!

Anyway, yesterday had 400 clams to last me rest of uni holidays, back to uni Monday....drinking at pub....300 clams left.....uber to casino approx 250 left.....more drinking 150 left.....smashed by now, another sound decision required......decided to Gamble.... enter rotor Gods in combination with smartphone, car sales app and another double wild Turkey.......

Pick up my first RX8 tomorrow, James Packer decided to buy it for me, fully paid in cash.....its old, it's red, it runs, is registered, new tyres, 6sp manual..... I dont know anything else...sorry, I also know it is not turbofied yet..hopefully it has a full tank of petrol! Needless to say I now believe in the rotor gods but have no idea if car is lemon or mint! I'm praying my ass off atm.
Don't have money to turbo it, or fix it if it is a lemon......I know I can't afford the petrol or oil bill......lucky I think it's sexy as hell, even if it's not moving.......so is owning an RX8 all I need to join RX8 club oz? Do I get a free tank of gas when I join?

Ps- as soon as I pick it up goin to casino and see if James Packer wants to buy a turbo kit for it.....damn I hope it has a full tank of fuel. Sorry in advance if this post is too big.

Ciao,
BB:thumbleft:

Car booked in with Tim on Friday to assess car, and hopefully he can quick fix the water leak I already have. I had Mazda inspection results and Tim quoted me on all the issues they identified, and explained the problems so I could understand. His quotes were much much much cheaper than Mazda. Will post results.

Hi and thanks Driffill, Generation and Kev13b. I noticed you guys have had your RX8's for a while. I was in Tim's shop on Friday Kev, mine is a red 03, but I wasn't in there on Saturday.
Tim seems like a straight shooter, however I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice. Tim has quoted me $1k for radiator replacement (koyo), new expansion tank, fl22 coolant and couple of hrs labour. Does this sound about right? I don't have a spare $1k lying around and was thinking of trying to change myself, using forums and youtube as my guide. Just wanting a second opinion, should I have a crack and change myself (I can afford now), or should I just wait till I have cash and get Tim to change? Any advice would be appreciated.

Firstly welcome.

Do you have a decent mechanical knowledge and ability? If so switching out the Radiator isnt massivley difficult. Ric Shaw has good rads from all accounts. Get one and switch it out yourself. Make sure you use the proper FL22 coolant and adhere to the ratios.

Detailing is an art, a gift and a curse. Use it wisely
Fellow Rotor fans gather now for our daily prayer.....

As I lay rubber down the street,
I pray for traction I can keep,
But if I spin and start to slide,
Please dear god protect my sweet ride.

Thought yours was the silver one in there, my bad. I recently sold my rx8.
Koyo was around $400 from the states around 1.5 years ago
FL 22 ~ $70 x 2 bottles (need 9 Liters)
Overflow from atkins ~ $200

1K is reasonable since the exchange is not as good as it was when I purchased all the the above so each item will be a bit more expensive along with the shipping. You could save a few dollars by getting Ric shaws radiator and the nulon equivalent fl22

Thanks guys for your advice. Have enquired with Ric Shaw if he has any radiators left. Might have a go at changing myself, but might wait until I have my BHR coils that Tim recommended and see if he can do all at once
Thanks again.

From first hand experience of someone who is mechanically minded, I'll pay someone to do the radiator any day. #$&@ of a job.
